I got and IUD the copper one late June I had my period in July on the 10th I started. I am late and it's going on 9 days. How long should I wait until I take a home test? If I am pregnant how much of a chance will I miscarry if I have the IUD removed? I have two kids and am running out of birthcontrol options. But I don't know if I want to get my tubes tied yet. I'm 28 and would like one more child but we're not ready yet. Any answers or information will be greatly appreciated.

I had an IUD put in in march (Mirena, not a copper one) after I had a baby in February, and I still haven't gotten my period. I called the Dr. and he said that it was okay, it was caused by the IUD.

If you are pregnant, they will want to do an ultrasound to check where the IUD is, If it's all the way in your uterus (the strings and all) they will most likely leave it alone, but if it's still part-way out, there is a greater chance of miscarriage because the cervix won't close properly.

I think what they do is take it out, and do a few stiched to keep the cervix closed, but I'm not really sure on that one. I think it's much more likely to be all the way inside and out of place, and that's why you got pregnant in the first place.

You can do a home test whenever you want, since you've already missed your period, but it's likely to be negative.

Good luck!

Some people experience their periods stopping with an IUD, but not usually with a copper one. You could be pregnant, or you could still be adjusting. In either case, go to the doctor for a blood test. They will need to remove it early if you are pregnant, as the chance of infection is high. Good luck.

it's rare to happen with a iud but still not unheard of. I believe THEY CAN NOT remove the iud without hurting the pregnancy call your doctor to be sure i belive they leave it in. You can take a test now. I have also heard a iud can mess up your cycles
