the British and many other countries call it football but us crazy Americans and some other countries do in fact call it soccer.
American football is very similar to British rugby but the ball is smaller and the rules very a little bit.

What? What "you" call American football, Americans just call "football." As in the NFL, college, Pop Warner...whatever.
Like New Zealanders, Aussies, South Africans, Canadians, Japanese, Koreans and I'm sure a few other nationalities, your football is called soccer. It stems from association football. For some stupid reason they took the "soc" out of that first word and voila!

And before you wang on us all about calling it soccer and why it isn't football and why we play football yet hardly kick the ball with our feet...learn a few things about the term "football" as those sports like Gaelic football, rugby union football, Canadian football and Aussie Rules football as well as your association football are sports all played ON your feet. Way back in the old jousting, hunting, etc. age sport was played on horseback hence the peons who had no dough developed sport played without horses or "on foot."

American Football and Canadian Football are called Football because the Brits have Rugby and the ex-patriates couldn't come up with anything more original.
