In the National League, the Dodgers & Giants finished the 162 game season tied and played a 3 game playoff to decide who won. The 3 games counted as regular season games for statistics.

For teams that played fewer than 162, the difference is likely in rained out games that weren't made up.

Back in the good old days, when there were only 16 teams in ML baseball...And, no division championship series or league championship series..If there was a tie for the AL or NL pennant they played a three game playoff...Which is why you see 157 games played in 154 game seasons or 165 in 162, it's rare but it did happen...rain outs was the correct answer for why there would be less games played...

The regular season in 1962 was 162 games..The Dodgers and Giants played a 3 game playoff which counted as regular season games. (thus they each played 165 games). Teams with under 162 games (I can only assume) were because of rain-outs that were not played.

Are talking about teams or players. If a player is traded he could possibly play more than 162 games.

I beleive that when a game is rained out, it's not counted in the total.
