I am moving into a house just off campus and the house next door is abandoned. There is the sweetest dog living there, but he is stuck in the back yard. My roommates (who have lived there this past year) feed him scraps and have called the SPCA several times, but they've never come to rescue him or give any advice. Does anyone have any suggestions about how we can make sure he will be ok? I feel so bad because he's so skinny, but he's the sweetest thing. We can't adopt him ourselves as our landlord does not allow pets. We intend to keep trying the SPCA, but if they haven't helped this far, who knows if they will in the future? Any (mature and sincere) advice will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!!!

Yes, I am from Philadelphia and thank you so much for all the wonderful advice! We do not plan on calling dog pounds or shelters without "do not kill" policies because many of these places just put animals to sleep without trying to find them homes. I will try to update when we find a home/ better situation for him.
Thank you!

O.K. It sounds like you have a dog. I've been in the same spot you're in. What I did,was to go out and buy some cheap dog food Put it in a big bowl and take it over to him. Make sure he has water too. Keep trying to get a hold of SPCA or the pound(I don't like that) that poor dog will die if you don't take care of it. I know that money might be tight for you right now, but feed him. See if you can get someone to take him. I befriended a dog who's owner was not taking care of her. She was so skinny... I went over to their house and called the dog. She came happily with me. I took her to the Vet and stop by the Police station, told them what I had done. They said if anyone would treat a dog like that it was better off with me. Case Closed. If anyone complained they would get a fine for animal abuse.

Wow, I am surprised the SPCA did not come because they are supposed to be famous for rescuing animals. Bless you for caring so much for this poor creature! I feel really sad just hearing about him as well. When we found our (stray) cat in the backyard, we put up adds in the newspapers, internet and put up flyers at our local convenient stores because we feared that she may belong to someone, but no one replied so we ended up keeping her and loving her. You may consider putting up an add too, to see if anyone wants a dog, but the sad thing is that most people who want to get pets would want healthy ones. Look up numbers in your local phone book for dog kennels or dog farms and such. I am sure you can find someone besides the SPCA, who will take in this animal and take care of him/her. I wish you and that dog luck.

Can you remove him from the yard? Maybe you could take him to the SPCA or an animal shelter. He needs care. Especially when winter comes. He'll need shelter. He's going to need shots. Thank you so much for feeding and watering him. He would die a long and painful death without you girls.

I say take it to a vet and tell them the story. I once found a pregnant beagle on the side of the raod and I took it to some houses that were close by but everyone said that they didn't own it or knew of anyone who did, so I took it to a local vet and they took care of it until the pups where old enough and the vet found them all loving homes. So take it to a vet if the SPCA won't do anything.

I feel so proud of you because you are trying 2 help! if u want 2 help the dog and hae a n intention on adopting him offer him/her 2 a fam. member, or another person you know very well, that'll take care of him/her. But a dog been skinny is a bad thing, i suggest you put some money together 2 give it some shots, and buy some food because it will die if more time passes without it getting proper nourishment!

well you could keep on feeding him scraps and making sure that he has adequate water, i would contact the Spca Immediately or i would take him to a shelter, and explain to them what is going on if all else fails call the Local Dog Catcher or Sheriff's Department and they should know what to do. Hope this helps

You could tell the animal shelter...but then you'd have to get the dog from out of the backyard..if that's OK.....then give it to the animal shelter and then someone will take him and then he'll have a good life :)

There are organizations that will rescue abandoned pets. I know of one called Angel Paws and there is one in Belle Mead; it is operated and owned by Mr. and Mrs. G. Macaluso.
The only other idea is possibly to call the Humane Society-every town has one.
It might be a good idea to give your town's name.

Call the SPCA and speak to a supervisor. If that dosen't work call city halls action center or the mayor's office and complain.
