yes, if you ask the employees of the pet store, they can help you take care of your newfound companion. i too am an animal lover, and i know from experience that there are many books that can help you take care of a new pet.

This is an excellent question. As a rule of thumb, pet store employees do not know much about the pets they sell, particularly when it comes to reptiles that need specialized care and particular environments and diets. Your larger pet stores that are chains are useless when it comes to information. Sometimes you will luck out and find a young employee who has had pets and knows something about certain species.
I wish all pet owners would take the time to do their research. Even if you currently own a pet (again, particularly reptiles)...you might think you know everything, but probably don't. Your pet may just barely be surviving on the care you give it...animals are like that...and you may not be aware that it is suffering. You might think you are being the best owner in the world while actually you are slowly killing it. A responsible pet owner should have the attitude that the owner should adapt to the pet, and the pet should not have to adapt to the owner.
So should you take the word of a pet store employee as gospel? Probably not. No person can know everything about every animal. I didn't think my cats could tap dance until I sent them to tap dance school. Now that they can tap dance, they want to take up the accordion and perform in catbarets.

I would never get an animal that I would not know how to take care of. You/ anyone needs to do serious research before they acquire an animal. There are several websites to check out, just google for info. Seriously though, I would never buy a pet from a pet store, they are only out for profit and get their animals from puppy "mills" who overbreed etc. Often the animals are not in good condition. A good place to get a dog or a cat is from a shelter. They will probably give good advice on their care and give pamphlets. As far as getting info from the pet store I have seen plenty of books on different pets.

The majority of petstore employees know next to nothing about the animals they sell. And they rarely suggest books. You are lucky if they hand you some care sheet that tells the very basics about the animal. For the most part don't listen to their advice. You are solely responsible for learning all aspects of the care of a pet you are considering. Talking to some petstore worker for 5 minutes doesn't count.

Not all petstores know how to care for them, they usually just want to sell you the product they have the most markup on or that the distributer gives them the most kickbacks for.
(I know you're not looking to buy one, this is my 2cents worth) It's much better to buy from a reputable breeder or to adopt from a shelter who will give you free support and advice at any time should you need it. Pet stores selling live animals contribute to the pet overpopulation problem and are outlets for puppy farms and kitten mills. Lots of pets bought from stores are sick and you can't be guaranteed of the genetics (eg: related pets are bred together). I know the same applies to shelter pets, but you are giving a home to a pet that would be euthanased and supporting petshops just allows all of them to make a quick buck.

I would suggest that if you are looking into buying an animal that you know nothing about do a little research online before you buy it and you can also buy a book about that animal. the more you research the better. good luck on your search.
