I'm trying to figure out an art activity to do with a group of high school students that touches on the issues of race and the importance of brand names, jewelry, fancy cars and that all too important Dom Perignon in hip hop culture. Any suggestions? SO appreciated. I'm drawing a blank. I was thinking of working with magazines somehow, but ... I don't know.

Maybe you could have them invent their own brand and luxury item to represent some aspect of themselves. I don't think I would limit it to race, because it would be interesting to see what could also be done with gender, weight, IQ, all kinds of things! You could have a little discusison (my kids often love the fish bowl technique) to get their brains flowing about the meaning, originas, and impact of this kind of imagery.

In the end, you could have them design a magazine add depicting their product and thus also something about how they define themselves. Might give them a choice of medium like collage or pencils or choose for them.

Alternatively, it might be neat to have a before and after type scenario, but maybe switch it to inside and outside--have them choose a garish image and then depict what the people on the inside are really thinking/feeling.

Or maybe think caricature. I'm an English teacher, so I'm thinking hyperbole--create a portrait and exaggerate some part of the outfit or environment that overshadows the subject for effect.
