I live in Houston, Texas and I was concerned if Paramedics are able to live comfortably off their salaries. I want to pursue a license next year to eventually work as a Paramedic, but I haven't heard from any people who work in the career field as of yet.

depends if you are on a volunteer department, (no pay), or for a salaried job. many small towns do not pay well enough for a family, but enough for an individual.

Generally salary.com can give you an idea of what a particular profession pays in a general geographic area. Also because paramedics are paid by the state, the salary ranges should be public record. I found a link for the firefighter pay scale. It looks like Paramedics earn 3 to 7K more depending on level.

Like other careers, your best best is to find "niche" within the paramedic field. For instance, many large manufacturers employ an on-site paramedic or nurse. In-flight paramedics are also paid fairly well. A paramedic working for a local ambulance squad would probably not fit into the "living comfotably" category.

A friend of mine has been working as an EMT. He makes about $10 right now. Yes, I couldn't believe it either. He told me Paramedics make about 30K. Now this is in the New Orleans area so I'm not sure if the Houston area would be more(I assume it's similar.) My friends says you have to love this job because there isn't much money in it.
