how much water does watermelons need to get big?

Lots. If it doesn't rain, I'd water it good and deep every other day. (unless drainage is a problem - then water only when the soil gets dry)

Lots of water in semi sandy soil for good drainage so they don't get root rot.

as much as it does not burst its skin away ! or else it may ask its neighbour to help keep the extra amount...
