Looking to upgrade a couple of computers in the office which are running 3ds Max, but budget is severely limited. SO which is more important? RAM or processor speed?

Processor speed is by far better than more RAM, but it's also the most expensive. If you can afford it, having a 2.4 Ghz Athlon X2, or a 2.0 Ghz or faster Intel C2D, plus 4 GB's of RAM is preferred.

You might want to look into getting processors that will fit into the sockets on the motherboards you already have, but upgrade to dual-core processors. They've now become remarkably cheap, and will give you a 75% boost in speed, if you buy the same speed proc. you had to begin with, but dual-core.

For me, I'll stick to having more RAM. Upgrading a pc's processor would be too expensive. I have a 2.0 GHZ pc but works much better than a 2.4GHZ pc because I added more RAM. I also recommend getting a video card for your PC's.

ram. the only time max is heavy on a processor is during rendering, but not as hard as it is on ram at the same time. if, however, you already have sufficient ram, and its not at all repaging, and you are doing tons of mass rendering, the processor will of course make this nominally faster.
