crack open the compaq and take a look see...
or as it boots up start the bios and it will tell you if the drive is SATA or not...

if not you'll need to get an adapter card/cable for the ATA drive to use it on the SATA board

Almost all recent motherboards have both SATA and PATA (aka ATA) connectors. This is necessary since most optical drives still use ATA connections.

Simply attach your old ATA hard drive to the ATA connector on your new motherboard.

The only thing you'll need to check is that the new motherboard preferentially boots from the SATA devices, rather than from the PATA devices. Those settings will be in the mobo BIOS.

PS. If you post future questions here, be sure to include other relevant info, such as the manufacturer and model of your new motherboard. If you had included such details, I would have been able to check the specs of the mobo for you to be sure that it has a PATA interface.

You can do this, but you need to buy a piece of hardware called an "adapter bridge". An adapter bridge is a printed circuit board that serves as an interface between the newer SATA motherboard and an older IDE hard drive. It should run you about $40. Check out this link in Yahoo! Search for some online retailers:
