I was in a car accident in 1999 and the doctors just told me to exercise and it would heal, but it hasn't and I sometimes get stuck trying to stand up after bending over to pick up an item. what's up with that?

Time to go back to a orthopedic surgeon for help. When pain radiates it says you have problems.

The latest for back injuries is not immediately surgery, rather time and exercise. Maybe you need to go to physical therapy who will teach your the right exercises and how to do them. You also need to learn correct ergonogics of bending and lifting to take some of the pressure off the spine. The PT can do that quickly.

Best advise I can give from my experience is, if there is pain STOP. If there is discomfort STOP. Slow and easy. Remember the body needs time to heal.

The fact that a physician would tell you that you would get better by exercising bothers me. Depending on where in your back the bulge is desides on the outcome. There are several procedures tht can be done. The reason you get "stuck" bending over is because there are nerves that run along your spinal column and nerve endings that stage between the disc and vertebrae. Once the disc bulges, it compresses the nerve and causes pain, nubmness, etc...
Working out the muscle group surrounding the disc will strenghten the muscle and actually force the disc to bulge even further. Go see another doctor and ask him about "blocking" procedures....

Most people have at least one abnormal disc. However, most people are not symptomatic.....
If you get stuck, I doubt it is because of a bulging disc.
Go in and see an orthopedic surgeon or a spine doc.
Have them look at you and see what is going on. I don't know what "get stuck" really means.

Sounds more muscular
A bulging disc would most likely cause neuro problems such as pain shooting down the legs, numbness, and or tingling.
