IF YOU are an agnostic, you come somewhere between an atheist and a theist. The atheist is convinced that God does not exist, while the theist has a firm belief that God does exist and that he is involved in human affairs.

The agnostic does not feel that there is enough evidence to say that God does or does not exist. Rather, he reserves judgment or says that if God does exist he is unknown and unknowable.

It means that they question/are unsure of the existence of god/higher being. There are two types of agnostic: hard agnostic and a soft agnostic. Soft agnostics question its existence but lean more towards the belief that there is a higher being. Hard agnostics lean more towards the belief that there is no higher being, but does not totally dismiss the idea as an atheist would.

Literally, "I don't know."

"A" for "not" plus "gnostic" for "understanding." Greek word roots.

My beloved has a bumper sticker that says "Militant Agnostic: I Don't Know and You Don't Either."

"gnostic" means "to know"

"a" is a prefix meaning "not"

so "agnostic" means "to not know"
