If you're getting rid of an old PC? Open the computer, unscrew the hard drive, drill it and bingo. Done.

Keeping your PC? Tougher to do this "irretrievably."

Good luck.

The only way to totally get rid of stuff from your hard-drive is to overwrite it.

Deleting doesn't remove the files - it simply marks the space where the files are as being available to be used again.

Reformatting is more thorough but a computer expert can retreive files even from a reformatted disk.

Physically overwriting everything on your hard-drive is the ONLY way to be sure EVERY file is completely irretreivable - it's called shredding.

There really is no best way to completely erase everything.

At my old job, we had personal and cofidental info on the computers, when it came time to upgrade, we had to send them off to a company who actually shreds the drives, and with each drive we got a warranty of sorts I don't remember how much money we would get if anything was retrieved from the drives.
