can i use my trip rewards to rent a car , not local but one way?

I'm not sure what your 'trip rewards' are, but I have American Airlines miles that I use to rent cars once in a while. I don't do it much because it is always a hassle at the counter. They have to call someone and wait and call someone else for authorization.

You can do it, but I don't care for the process.

Renting a car one way shouldn't be different than renting local. You need to let them know what city you are dropping off the car, that's all.
