If the screen is cracked (not the casing) then stop using and dispose of it carefully. The hissing and crackling (not cracking right?) sound is coming from the high voltage connectors. Because of the age of the monitor, there would be a lot of dust inside. The rubber insulation of these connectors would have hardened and cracked because of the heat. The sound is due to small arcing. In the worst case case scenerio, a small fire might result from this.

10 years is a pretty good long life for a monitor. Time to retire it and buy a flat screen LCD.

GET RID OF THAT THING... you are asking to have a monitor blow up in ya face... seriously...crackling and poping from a tube device is VERY BAD! only a matter of time before it goes boom... or starts an electrical fire...

thats very dangerous... it could hurt you, or anyone who lives with u...it can also damage ur computer... buy a new one... if u dont want to spend money just buy a used one from a near computer store mine is 30 $ its good no cracking sound and stuff.

DO NOT TRY TO OPEN THE MONITOR TO SEE WHATS WRONG INSIDE IT COULD KILL YOU EVEN IF ITS NOT CONNECTED TO ELECTRICITY BECAUSE MONITORS AND TVS KEEP THE ELECTRICAL CHARGE FOR A LONG TIME

1. fill the bathtub with water...

No, wait. Unplug the monitor. Go to the thrift store and buy a new-to-you monitor. Recycle your old one in accordance with local law. You can't just throw them in the trash.

ductape the screen (so it dont shatter), turn it off, and gently hit the crack with a battery or other object to break it. now it wont be a shatter hazerd, then you can safely move it.
