I understand how players win points, but looking at rankings from one week to another, it seems that they also LOSE points - and I can't figure out how this happens... ?
Thanks

So now we have two systems since a lot of people were confused by the system that you asked about. But it's pretty simple really.

You're correct, players can lose points as well as gain them. The reason is that points must be "defended". So lets say that I won the event up in Toronto this past weekend (knocked off Federer in a 3rd set tie break!). And lets say that winning that event was worth 100 points (no idea of the top of my head - just a number). Now I don't pick up any points for the rest of the year (beating Federer just took too much out of me) so at the end of the year I have 100 points.

Now a new year starts, a new season, and I play one of the early events in January. I reach the semi-finals and pick up 30 points. So now I have 130 points. The season winds on and I'm not having much success. August comes around and I head up to Canada to play the same Masters event that I won last year, but this year I only make it to the quarter-finals. I get 20 points for making the quarters, but I had 100 points to defend from last year, so now I have 50 points - 30 from making the semis in January + 20 from making the quarters - 100 from winning the event last year.

So you have to defend the points that you won during the previous year - if you don't then they are deducted from your total. You can replace them by winning new points, but then you have to defend those points the following year. It's a rolling total, the points don't just add up during the year and then you start at zero the next year (thats the OTHER ranking system).
