The Notebook was the most romantic story I ever read and watched in my life. I saw the movie and it was just as powerful as the book.

I like Howl's Moving Castle. It's about 18 yr old Sofi who gets cursed by a witch, because of a wizard named Howl. She's turned into an old lady, and becomes the cleaning lady in his castle. There's a fire demon named Calisfer and Howl's apprentice, Markl. With a war between two kingdoms, all wizards/witches are ordered to report. Howl doesn't want to fight though, and gets Sofi to try and get him out of it. Howl falls in love with Sofi for who she is rather than what she looks like, and she manages to break the curse on him and herself.

Wuthering Heights. Book or movie (the Olivier version). Very intensely romantic... sure to get your sweetie in a weeping mood.

Rebecca. Very strange tale by Daphne du Maurier about a young bride who married a middle-aged man, a wealthy one at that, and moves into his mansion. She is haunted (not literally, but by her memory) by his dead wife who is, you guessed it, Rebecca. It's not a romance in the traditional sense but is one of the most compelling and suspenseful tales you'll ever read, and it's set in England probably around the 30's.
