I'm surprised that some movies get the greenlight and then have an $80 Million budget and basically you can tell from the concept, the movie is going to bomb. Assuming ticket prices average $8.00 each and the studio gets approx. $6.00, the movie needs to do $110 Million just to break even - not counting DVD sales and /or TV rights, etc.
Example: Friends with Money has earned $13.6 million and at 75% to the studio, about $10 Million goes to Sony. This probably didn't cover Jennifer Aniston's salary for the film.

Not really. Most of the crappy ideas start from production agencies attached or contracted to studios. So if the agent representing, let's say Samuel L. Jackson, wants his client to do a blockbuster B-movie that in turn pays his client and himself, then it's all good. I **** you not, there was one agent who wanted to do a movie called Volcano of Fire about some asteroid that crashes into a huge volcano and explodes, etc., etc. and only one person can stop it (of course). Thankfully he was laughed at and the movie was never made. Yet.
