I heard something in the woods last nite outback of my house screaching all nite...heard it this a.m. and when it was dusk took my dog for a walk and my cat usually comes with us, but he was waiting for us to come up the hill i could hear the screaching agin...and i didnt have my glasses on, but could something dark brown and not much bigger than my cat, screaching and trying to get at the cat. But when it saw me coming up the street it ran off. Just wondering what they sounds like??

*sigh* I only sigh because of the stigma that fisher cats have gotten. By the sound of your description, it sounds that it could have been a fisher.

It is possible that the fisher *could* attack your cat, but it would prefer it's normal diet of squirrels to your cat anyday. If you are generally concerned about it, keep your cat indoors and your dog on a leash.

I've included a link so that you can read up on them. I have cared for a fisher before, and found them to not be the "blood-thirsty-cat-killing mammals" as most people make them out to be.

Fishers sound a bit like a kid screaming, they can be surprisingly noisy. I would suggest keeping your cat indoors for a while - at least until the fishers have moved to another area of their territory as they WILL kill both your cat and dog.
