Someone told me it died in 1987, but I don't beleive him. With bands like NoFX, and The Adicts, how can it be dead?

Punk is both dead and alive. In a sense, it was killed by the droves of teenages flocking to Hot Topic to get some Misfits gear. At the same time, if you go to certain shows, you'll find some genuine fans.

As far as mainstream goes, it is now the most trendy of the trends. People don't really know what punk is anymore. Real punk is dead. Bubblegum punk is alive and well in the US.

People tend to say something is dead when it falls out of the mainstream. Punk rock will always have its fans and its scene... but it may not be mainstream anymore, whereas before you'd find teenager girls singing God Save the Queen or bombshell... now a 12 year old teeny bopper probably has no idea who the Sex Pistols... or Operation Ivy, or NOFX are... but probably listens to Jessica Simpson or something... I don't know what their listening to these days.

If you consider Green Day punk, I'd say it still exists in the mainstream.

Punk isn't dead.

It is, however, a vegetable. Yeah, we've still got bands like the Adicts- and in my book, they're punk. But once they're gone... there'll be nothing left, and there's nothing new that's punk. A true punk revival, as opposed to an immitation revival, is pretty much impossible.

The punk rock scene died around 1987. It lasted about a decade (1977-1987)..... the music started a few years give or take before '77 and ended with the advent of Grunge in 1990.

i don't think it's really dead. but if i had to choose a year like 1984. It kind of lost it's original spirit by then.
