Because one's number started off as their position in the batting order, no names were necessary. Through the years, as teams grew, there was no space for others to have numbers, so they went higher. In addition, jerseys became retired, making it impossible for your number to be your batting spot. Then, it became a numbering system purely as a means of identification. The Yankees, being a team so rich in history and tradition, has not changed many of the team's rules, like the no-facial-hair one. This team realizes the importance of history and maintains it as much as possible.

Team used to not even have numbers. The Yankees were the first to put numbers on their jerseys. At the begining of the numbers it was where in the lineup they ussually hit, hence Ruth 3 and Gerhig 4.
The Yankees dont have numbers because they dont need them. I think it would look weird to have their names on the jersey.

Tradition and making the statement that its a team game. I like the names on the jerseys much better personally. Of course, it is up to the individual team to decide, but for the fan much better to have the name of the player on the jersey. Sure, you know the stars names, but everybody on the team isn't a star.

All mlb teams dont wear their names on their jerseys when it is a home game. Because they assume that the home crowd knows what the players names are. The Yankees have names on their jerseys when they are the away team, as do all mlb teams

Its tradition, they know that the name on the front of the jersey is more important than the name on the back.. which is exactly how it should be. Its a team game and they play as a team

Tradition. When numbers were first introduced to jerseys, you wer your number in the batting order. The Yankees, believe it or not, have a philospy that no player is larger than the team, therfore no names.

actually, this goes back a while ago - the home team didn't wear their names on their jerseys because the home town fans (if they WERE fans) already knew who the player was by number - the players would only have names on their jerseys when they wre on the road because that city's fans did not know who they were - also, the teams then believed in playing for the name on the front of the jersey (the team) and not the name on the back (themselves) - the Dodgers actually do this also
