I see some people have like 11 thousand points, are they getting something other than being the top dog of points?

I don't think that the points are good for anything but for others to see how many you have and for everyone to compete for the most points. There are those with about 100,000 points and are at level 7 (go to the leaderboard from your Q&A page to see). They aren't good for anything but a competition, but it sure is fun trying to get them!
