i have been in a relationship with my girlfriend for 11 months. we have not discussed income (we're both students in school who work part time). At what point do we disclose how much money we are making?

if you tell her how much you make then in her mind she is going to set a dollar amount she is going to expect you to spend on her

There is no such thing as good debt, and credit cards in particular are evil debt. If you're serious about your girlfriend, know this...if you enter the marriage deep in debt, the marriage is doomed to fail. You should seek financial counseling right away. Depending on your income and other debts, you might even need to file bankruptcy. While this has nothing to do with the girlfriend, it is just ONE STEP that needs to be completed before you take your romantic relationship to that next level. Your eventual goal is to have zero debt. No mortgage, no credit cards, no car payment, literally nothing that you do or own is something that you borrowed money for. Your bills should consist of... Utilities (gas, water, electric, etc.) Food Housing (ie, rent...as a mortgage is a terrible waste of money!) Telephone (cell phone, you can easily ditch the landline if you haven't already) Internet (Cable modem, DSL, whatever) Optional: Television service like Dish Network or something like that Anything else not on that list that you make payments on (monthly or more frequent) is a bill that you need to get rid of ASAP. This is financial common sense that is not-so-common. You might not figure this out for yourself until you are much older. But for now, you need to learn to live life without credit. That includes cars, btw. Without the credit card bills, you could have set aside that money over the past year or so to buy a nice used car with ONE payment. (not financed, you OWN it when you drive it off the lot) All this is financial advice I wish someone had given me many years ago. I had to learn "the hard way". Having a serious girlfriend though makes it much more urgent for you to start living in a financially responsible manner, NOW. Neither one of you can bring any debt into the marriage. In fact, having debt (yours, hers or joint) during the marriage will almost certainly doom the marriage to failure. But you shouldn't be doing this for her or the two of you. You should do it for YOU.

The last guy I dated told me his whole financial history, and even after I broke up with him (he wasn't affectionate enough), it still makes me feel creepy thinking about it. I guess it was because I was afraid that he thought of himself as a walking wallet in a world of prostitutes.

Don't tell her until AFTER she says yes to marriage, otherwise you will wonder if she said yes because of how much you make.

I think telling her only applies when you two are sharing assets like living together, owning a business together, and yes, like what others said, marriage.

well well you are in love and you will be talking about your plans in the future. off course, you will need to talk about money matters
like how to budget and to save. you need to discuss things and it always come down if you have the cash to do it. but foremost of all you have to finish your studies. kudos!
