There are no digits in the VIN to indicate the transmission type.

Digit 1 is the country of origin (US = 1)
Digit 2 is the manufacturer (ford /mazda = Z)
Digit 3 is the car line (probe = V)
Digit 4 is the restraint system (B = active seat belts)
Digit 5 is the line (T = passenger car)
Digits 6 and 7 are the body style (20 = GL, 21 = LX, 22 = GT)
Digit 8 is the engine (L = 2.2)
Digit 9 is the check digit for a valid VIN
Digit 10 is the year (K = 89)
Digit 11 is the assembly plant (5 = Flatrock MI)
remainder is the actual serial number

Some of the possible digits will change with the year, but not what part they represent

See Mazda 626 Same years Illinois car plant made both Ford And Mazda probe and MX-6,626. In the front of the Mazda service manual there is the 17 digit decoder you seek.
