Try the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The peak season for picking huckleberries occurs between mid-August to mid-September. Each harvester is allowed three gallons of huckleberries free of charge per year. If larger quantities are wanted, or if you plan to sell your berries, a Special Forest Product permit is required.

If you are looking to find the berries in the woods on your own, The Oregon State Education website has detailed information on the conditions, elevations and typical locations where the berries can be found. Finding a good logging road to the south west of the city off highway 26 or to the north east towards Astoria and then looking on the eastern slopes of the hills will probably reward you with your own berry locations that you can return to year after year.

Happy hunting - and yum!

On eastern hillsides. Pick early in the morning and beware of the bears. They have killer purple ones in NW Montana in Libby.
