Oil. Oil Profits. More Oil. More Profits. And so what if a lot of people get killed? His Big Oil buddies are getting richer and richer as long as the oil isn't flowing. Then, once it starts flowing, they'll get even richer. Its a win-win situation for him and his buddies.

It appears there are more than one or two reasons to be there.
1. Free flow of gas (to prevent Iran from taking it over)
2. Democratic country
3. To isoloate Iran by surrounding it with PakistanAfghanistan,
India and Iraq.. all democratic governments.even a likelyhood
Saudi Arabia joining in a semblance of democracy. plus the
several little countries in the area,who are friendly.
4. To give some strength to those in Iran who are intent of seeing
a regime change.

Install a stable democracy that will pressure other dictatorships in the area to make reforms or face civil wars by their people.
to have a 3rd ally ally in the region in case of further instability.
to create a self-supporting native military in Iraq so US troop strenth can be reduced.
