If you are just trying to make some space, try ccleaner, it's free, and throws away stuff you don't need.

If you are trying to erase your whole drive and all the files on it, get yourself a boot disk and format c:

WINDOWS XP
Go to START - My Computer - Local Disk (C:)
Documents and Settings
Top Menu Bar - Click on TOOLS
Click on Folder Options
Click on View
Click on Show Hidden
Files & folders
Click on Hide Procted
System & OS
Files
Double Click on your Folder (Profile) Delete all Files In:
Cookies
Click on Local Settings
Delete all files in the TEMP folder
Delete all files in the Tem Internet Files
Delete all files in the Recent Folder
Delete Time Period files in the History Folder
Go back to TOOLS on the Menu Bar - Folder Optios - View
reset back to original values - click apply
Go back to your Folder (Profile)
Click on My Documents - Check for data that you do not
want and delete it.

if you have stuff you want NO ONE (including the feds) to find... you'll either have to format your hd 10 times or take it out and run a VERY powerful magnet over it to clear it completly... if its not that serious then use a few of the programs mentioned above

If you mean to totally erase it without possibility of recovery, use a program like Window Washer.
