There are 64 teams plus two teams play for the 64th spot, so 64 games total... 1 game for the 64th spot (16th cede in one of the four regions), 32 1st round games, 16 2nd round games, 8 sweet 16 games, 4 elite 8 games, 2 final four games, 1 championship game. Kinda confusing, I know. The best way to see it is to print out a bracket and look at the process of the tournament.

That would be 68 games
37 in the opening round, 16 in the second, 8 in the Sweet 16, 4 in the Elite Eight, 2 in the Final Four, and 1 for the national championship

Any time a single-elimination tournament is played, the total number of games will always be one less than the number of teams involved. And each game eliminates one team.
In a 65 team tournament, you play until all but one teams have been eliminated...in other words, you would play 64 games.
In a simplified form, consider an 8 team tournament, single elimination:
1 vs 8
2 vs 7
3 vs 6
4 vs 5
Assume also, that this tournament goes according to seeding.
That's 4 games in the first round.
then:
1 vs 4
2 vs 3
That's two more games to decide who plays for the title.
Finally,
1 vs 2
One game for the championship.
4 games in first round
2 games in second round
1 game for the title
Equals:
7 Games total...starting with 8 teams, with each game eliminating one team. The champion does not get 'eliminated'.
Hope that helps.
