Here are the lyrics. I think songs are always open to interpretation. What the lyrics mean to one person may be completely different from what they mean to someone else.
I'm so tired of being here
Suppressed by all of my childish fears
And if you have to leave
I wish that you would just believe
Because your presence still lingers here
And it won't leave me alone
These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase
When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I've held your hand through all of these years
But you still have...all of me
You used to captivate me
By your resonating light
But now I'm bound by the life you left behind
Your face it haunts my once pleasant dreams
Your voice it chased away all the sanity in me
These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase
When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I've held your hand through all of these years
But you still have...all of me
I've tried so hard to tell myself that you're gone
But though you're still with me
I've been alone all along
When you cried I'd wipe away all of your fears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I've held your hand through all of these years
But you still have...all of me...oh
Me...oh...me...oh

I'm sorry I can't help with that exact song. I do know my boyfriend and his family had a real hard time listening to it after his Grandmother passed away.
But I have another song that, if you don't have any luck with that one might work. It's called "Goodbye's (the Saddest Word)" by Celine Dion. We just played it at my Grandma's funeral today. I'm not a big Celine fan, but the song is beautiful.
And as far as the Evanescence song goes, if it comforts you, and has special meaning to you, go ahead and use it. If anyone questions it, 1) I doubt anyone would- that's rude and tacky and 2 ) you can explain that the song has special meaning for you.
I'm very sorry for your loss, I cannot imagine what losing a mother is like.
Here are the words to Celine's song, in case you are interested.
Mamma- You gave life to me
Turned a baby into a lady
Mamma - All you had to offer
Was the promise of a lifetime of love
Now I know, There is
no other Love like a mother’s love for her child
And I know, A love so complete
Someday must leave, Must say goodbye
Goodbye’s the saddest word I’ll ever hear
Goodbye’s the last time I will hold you near
Someday you’ll say that word and I will cry
It’ll break my heart to hear you say goodbye
Mamma -You gave love to me
Turned a young one into a woman
and Mamma - All I ever needed
Was a guarantee of you loving me
‘Cause I know There is no other
Love like a mother’s love for her child
And it hurts so
That something so strong
Someday will be gone, must say goodbye
Goodbye’s the saddest word I’ll ever hear
Goodbye’s the last time I will hold you near
Someday you’ll say that word and I will cry
It’ll break my heart to hear you say goodbye
But the love you gave me will always live
You’ll always be there every time I fall
You are to me the greatest love of all
You take my weakness and you make me strong
And I will always love you ‘til forever comes
And when you need me
I’ll be there for you always
I’ll be there your whole life through
I’ll be there this I promise you, Mamma
Mamma, I’ll be your beacon through the darkest nights
I’ll be the wings that guide your broken flight
I’ll be your shelter through the raging storm
And I will love you ‘till forever comes
Goodbye’s the saddest word I’ll ever hear
Goodbye’s the last time I will hold you near
Someday you’ll say that word and I will cry
It’ll break my heart to hear you say goodbye
‘Till we meet again...Until then...Goodbye

I believe that it refers to an unresolved situation with a lover that died a while ago ("all of these years"). I say unresolved because the singer has tried to forget but can not. In that sense, it can be about a relationship also, by a strong metaphor to passing away. It is a beautiful and melancholic song, don't know if I would chose it for a similiar situation but it has a strong link.
Sorry 'bout your mum. One song I always liked for similar situations is "The Living Years" by Mike and the Mechanics, you might want to check it out.

Check lyrics.com(not sure about the site name). You will be able to find the lyrics there. Just read through it and make your decision. I think it is about the connection between two people. If you think it is a special song and it has meaning to you then go ahead and play it. If not, then not.

I think it has more to do with the ending of a relationship and the person who was left not wanting to let go.
