If you did not sign the lease then there is no contract and they must return it.
A security deposit is your money and is held by a landlord as insurance you pay rent and do not damage the apartment. As such they have no right to it if there is no lease signed.

Were the crimes recent? If the landlord did not tell you about them then you have a good chance to get back your deposit. The landlord will likely refuse to give it back, but you can take your case to small claims court or just call your local Legal Aid office for guidance.

Did you get a receipt? You should be able to get your money back. In the future do not give money before signing a lease. Did the landlord disclose the rape info?

cancel the check of money order if the landlord is being a dumb *** about it. if no lease or contract has been signed and you haven't moved into the unit you have every right to your deposit. if you paid cash and didn't get a receipt = good luck.

It depends on where you live. Some do not have to. You should never put a deposit down unless you signed something for proof of the deposit.

yes you can get your deposit back if you do not sign the lease then your deposit is void and so is the transaction if the lanlord will not give the deposit back willingly then all you have to do is file charges and your local circut court clerks office or just call the police dept. and the will talk to the lanlord and if they do not give it back to you when they talk to them go ahead and file the charges

Minus the amount of time it takes him to advertise it again, i do believe. You can take it to small claims if he wont return it. Technically a contract was never made, i hope you kept record that he has the deposite.

They are not obligated to return the deposit, they were holding that apartment for you which subsequently they took off the market so just forget it and move on...

.Under the circumstances of 4 rapes, I think that proves it is an unsafe apartment and you should get it back. Contact legal aid.
