Some birds (actually most) are diurnal which means their circadian rhythms are such that they are awake during the day. By being awake during the day, it can be assumed they eat and reproduce during the day as well. Further, it means they are defensively equipped to handle day time and probably poorly equipped to handle night time (vision issues). By waking up at or with the first crack of light, this maximizes their potential in all of these categories while minimizing the risk of being at a competitive disadvantage. Basically, non-nocturnal birds need to be awake as early and as long as possible in order for their genes to survive or at least have a fair shot at survival.

Not all do, take the new zealand kiwi. Lazy buggers during the day.. but come the evening, you try and stop them....
Nightjars also. Pathetic in the morning, bone idle.
Eagle Owls. These birds are not good at the 'up with the lark' morning thing also....
