Michigan is the best. Jealous?

I am curious about the south. The cuture of the south is one of hate and unfriendliness, given their slave-owning history. How much more rude and unfriendly can you be than to enslave others?!?

Many people are disgruntled in Michigan because they have no jobs. Michigan is hit hard by layoffs and other general stupidity including economic drafting. I moved to Michigan with a BA in English and 3 years' management experience and in the past year have only found a job serving coffee. I'm told I am lucky.

Compared to other places, such as my native Philadelphia, the tri-cities area of Michigan is kinder in terms of driving and manners. However, I find that there are more narrow-minded people there, or some people that simply haven't traveled or met people of other cultures, and that causes them to be racist or mean. The only black people some of those white people know are violent and rude and cost city money--but coming from another place, I know better than to think that or generalize in that way, because I have had a more various living experience and education.

People in Michigan, in my opinion, tend to be smug rather than rude. "My values are better than yours," or "I'm a better mom" are more frequent insults than cutting off another driver or the 'f you' you might get in Philadelphia.

You must have just met the one or two people who were having a bad day. I have several friends in Michigan, and I have been in the state several times, and have never had an unpleasant experience. Try again!

You must be from the south! I'm from Houston and I moved to Traverse City. I thought everyone was rude at first, but came to realize that people there just aren't used to people being outwardly funny and smiling all the time . I don't know if this is a southern or larger city thing! Once they get to know you (and once tourist season is over), they will love you and your "weird" accent! Just be patient! And you will be absolutely amazed at how much they don't know about the rest of the country!

i personally think it the whole northern states not just michigan. ive been to illinois and to pennsylvania and ive had rude remarks from people in both those states. one of the rudest comments i had toward me was as soon as one woman found out that i was from the south (she asked where i went to tan) she asked how i felt about my ancestors owning people and calling them property. i told her i had no idea that at that time my family was amish the last people who would do anything like that. she shut her mouth quick. but i dont think it just michigan.

Because they rode the Manufacturing revolution and all of them were uneducated yet making large coin off of the Auto industry. Now, they are all still uneducated and those high-paying blue collar jobs are all gone. Reality check.
