I think our leadership is trying to keep us in a place of fear. It is much easier to control people that way. If people are afraid, they will agree to things that they would never agree to otherwise. For example, allowing people to be arrested, held, and deported to other countries without ever having seen a lawyer or judge; or allowing wiretapping of American citizens without a warrant even thought warrants can be obtained easily before or within 72 hours after the surveillance. This is just some of the rights we have lost in the past 5 years.

It's just you.
It's not that the world has taught americans to be afraid of everything; americans have actually convinced themselves that they need to be afraid.
As with so many things, the reality is...quite different.
In reality, this is actually the safest time to be alive, ever, in all of history. Crime, of every kind, has been falling for decades now, and, contrary to popular belief, you're probably more likely to get struck by lightning than you are to be killed by a terrorist. And medical science has never been more effective than it is now.
What HAS changed is that, in the same time period that crime has fallen dramatically, the news *coverage* of crime has actually increased exponentially.
There's less crime, but you see it more often on television.
And, of course, it never helps that those in charge of the american government use and promote this fear to keep themselves in power.
(And there's the same rate of shark attacks as there have ever been; again, there's just more coverage on television, and more people at the beaches.)
Of course, there *are* things that it would be prudent to fear, but most people don't, perhaps because they're so commonplace. Things like car accidents, electrocution, heart disease, and whatnot. It is a good idea to be cautious of, and preventative about, those sorts of things - they're a lot more likely to kill you than are terrorists or rapists.
There are actually plenty of statistics on what actually kills people, and what crimes actually occur, if you care to find out. Just search the web.

well there are things that can happen to anyone , we all know to be aware of these things , we live in a dangerous world. we are more afraid of Arabs today because Arabs came here and flew our planes into our towers . they are a potential threat to us just like sharks , child abductors , so it only makes sense to fear the stuff that can hurt us

I'm not afraid of everything, but I wouldn't want a lot of Arabs on my plane either. To not be nervous, is naive.

You're free to do what you want. You don't have to be afraid if you don't want to.
