Your family doctor will probably do the same things as the OB's, blood draw. Some people prefer to stay with their family doctor, while others prefer an OB. For me I would go with an OB/GYN, since they see pregnant women all the time.
For me to get my u/s through my OB, I had to see my family doctor for a referral, so if it's been a while since you have seen your family doctor better see them too. My family practice sees OB patients on a regular basis, but I just prefer a regular OB, since they knew my history from my last pregnancy.
Congrats

There is also the option of a midwife. Have you thought about that? You will get so much more personal care. you won't be "just another patient" You get on average an hour per appointment with a midwife vs about 10 minutes with a doctor.
Many midwives will deliver in a hospital and work with an OB. You should read up about them and add them to your possible care provider list.
I wanted to add....there is a great book called "A Good Birth a Safe Birth" it talks about the different care providers and what to expect from the. A family practice doctor, yes they can delivery babies. This book talks about family doctors, OBs, nurse midwives and direct entry midwives.
Congrats on your pregnancy and good luck.

Well, it all depends on your insurance too. My insurance has me see my family doctor to confirm pregnancy then they referred me to a ob. I loved my ob and I agree with the other comment that I personally would prefer an ob. They deal with pregnancy on a daily basis and know all the up to date tests and what to look for in case of complications. Good luck to you and congrats.

When you are pregnant you see an OB doctor they are the ones who specialize in woman and pregnancy...not a family doctor.

see the ob/gyn, its the first logical step :)
You family doctor would really only be able to draw blood for the initial blood work, and thats about it. The ob will be able to do it all. You moms right :)

I never went to my pcp first, if I knew I was pregnant than I made an appointment with the OB/GYN.

Go see your ob/gyn. During pregnancy (even the very beginning) you want to see someone who specializes in pregnancy.

I would definitely see the OB-GYN first. Because that's what they specialize in.

No, your mom is right, the doctor who sees you throughout the pregnancy is the Obstetrician. The family doctor will just refer you to her. Good luck!

well first if you have a doctor already you can ask if he/she specials in prenatal care. If not ask if they can recommend a really good OB/GYN doctor
