when is it correct to draw the line. i had an employee talk back to me in front of guest. i told him all i ask from him was to do his job. everything i said he had something negative to say. Am i in the right by writing him up on his last write up?

I would not write him up, I'd pull him into my office and explain to him what he did and tell him in the future it would not be tolerated. If he gave me any crap I'd then write him up and tell him to consider himself warned. Also I'd watch him very carefully, folks like that put negative vibes out to other employees and start uproars for no reason...

"Praise in public and punish in private". A manager should respect his employee's by following this rule and you are entitled to that same respect. Encourage you employee's to confront you with issues and they rarely will ever escalte past a conversation.

It depends if a union company or not. Did he do it to just smart off? Did he continue after you asked him to not make comments? If he just showed disrespect and was just being a smart mouth the answer is yes. This is called insubordination.

Without knowing all the details....It sounds like this guy should be writen up. If part of your job is giving him task to do and he doesn't do them (while being rude to you in front of customers) then it sounds like he doesn't want his job any more

yes it would be proper to write him up just so sthat he could explain why he did what he did
