A leopard gecko is a good, fun beginner species, and could live comfortably in a tank that size for its entire life. Other good beginner lizards are Uromastyx (have two), bearded dragons, and blue tongue skinks (have one). But they will eventually need something much larger... 35 gallons really isn't that big. Stay away from Iguanas and water dragons, they need HUGE (closet sized) cages when grown. Also desert species seem to be more beginner-friendly because you don't have to worry too much about humidity. Check out http://www.anapsid.org for good species-specific info.
Good luck!

Lizards are not really low maintenance pets, they need the right temps (two kinds) the right light (some need uv, some don't), you must keep the tank very clean, most are susceptible to bacteria, etc. I don't want to talk you out of it, just be wise about it. They need live food, so be prepared to house and feed crickets and worms. Also, don't get one if you can't afford the vet.

There are alot of different lizards you can get. Green anoles are really easy to care for and they don't get very big. Remember to take into consideration how big it's gonna be as an adult and how much time you can devote to it. I owned a few anoles and they don't take much to care for. I currently own a 3 1/2 foot iguana, and he is a handful!! Whatever lizard you choose, make sure to research to make sure his diet and habitat are adequate. If you choose an iguana, a great book to get is "Green Iguana, The Ultimate Owner's Guide" by James W. Hatfield III. I hope I helped!!

you should get a mountain horned water dragon. they are awesome lizards that have two horns on the back of their head and teeth like a vampire's. they are tame and easy to care for, just crickets, water, heat, and regular care. had one and loved it! they love to sit and camoflauge in house plants in the sun. kinda like water dragons. beautiful and great choice! good luck!
