Judging by your user name, if you are joining the Army, go with the Welder! You will be overwhelmed by the Diesel repairs in the Army. I know they are offering great sign on bonuses for Diesel mechanics, but that is because the new diesel engines are a nightmare, and nobody wants to work on them. Stay clear of the diesels if you want to pull your duty without backbreaking labor! I would take welding over the 6.0 liter Diesels anyday.

i would go Diesel Mechanic.
with the price of oil and gas, and given the latest performance and economy diesels are getting, they are going to be getting bigger then they are now.
welder is a good job as well, but welders tend to get a certain poisoning from the welding gases, which im sure someone who reads this will post the actual name that i cannot remember.

Both trades are good,,,if you obtain a good apprenticeship you will learn welding anyway,,it's part of being a well rounded Heavy Duty"Diesel" Mechanic.
Welding is an interesting trade but its an unforgiving one,,while both trades are realy hard on the body,,,Welding is terrible on your lungs and eye's.
I have been a Heavy Duty Mechanic for 20 years,,i specialized in Brake systems and suspension, but i dont do either anymore,(I'm worn out),my Son has asked me the same questions you have,,,,I suggested to him, to find a trade which is less hazardous, and physicly cleaner,,such as: Custom Auto upholstery.

There are more Diesel Jobs than welding Jobs
But welding pays alot better if you get a job doing a high building...
Diesel jobs are in demand but there are so many people going into this career.
I guess this would be your choice but I would go into welding for the money

Both are high paying jobs. Diesel mechanic is Ok. Welding exposes you to fire and smoke (including flash) hazards, which is not good for any individual in the long run.

they both pay well and they both require a good mechanical understanding of how things work if you are thinking of learning how to work on vehicles or diesel engines you should also learn to weld its a very good skill to have as a mechanic i have been a diesel mechanic and i loved it until i hurt my back, welding is usaully good pay and long hours and the good amount of slag burns

Depends. If you're a shop welder, it's not too bad. But pipeline, depending on where you're at, you'll burn up of freeze.
Nothing like being ***-deep in a mudhole and trying to stick a rod in your lead without electrocuting yourself. Good times.
