I totally like think that the English language is like totally going down the toilet! Like, all I hear is poor grammar and like, it's really super depressing! Like, what can we do about it? It's like an epidemic or like, something.

Because if you say "like" in front of a word, then that word can be anything you want it to be. It frees up your language. For example,

"I had like 20 e-mails this morning."

It doesn't have to be exactly 20, in fact it could be way off, but you don't have to give the exact number so you can speed along to the next topic. Young people talk really fast so a word like "like" comes in very handy.

And yes, it does sound stupid. They will grow out of it. In like 10 years.

It's because they grew up watching the Smurfs but they do know enough to not say "smurf" every other word. Really, it's just a filler word, like y'know, umm, well. As we mature we learn to compose our thoughts before we open our mouths or we start using meaningless phrases like "well, I'll tell ya" to fill the conversational gaps.

Like is used by while speaking to bridge the gaps during a conversation in which the person speaking is trying to gather thoughts. Simalar words used are Um and Uh.

Like that?

It's a sort of fear of talking....they say that like adults will say 'umm'. Most people, for whatever reason, are afraid of long pauses. As if it will degrade the conversation or kill it or something. So take that senetence and pull out all of the likes and add 'umms' and it may make more sense to you.

It's a bad habit that's very hard to get rid of. Fills in between words instead of and, uh, um, and so, etc.' Became popular in the 60's and never went away.'

It's a filler word. I forget the linguistic term for it, but everyone does it, just with different words. Or "um". Which is, like, totally worse.

Dude, I like totally agree! I think the problem , or whatever, is our parents' like generation, has like a greater respect for the like ability to like buy stuff, then they do for our like schooling, or whatever. As a result, taxes and stuff were like cut back on, and like the school systems are like getting worse and stuff. That coupled with the media frenzy on people who don't speak right, or whatever, and the adolescent focus on rap music, and on like people who don't like think education is important, or whatever, is helping to like deteriorate our language.

Thanks for like the two points, or whatever

I hate it so much when people keep using LIKE after every other word...reason for it, who knows

Its just like UHHH, and Uhhh, you know, right?
Right? like you~ Uhhh got it right?

Takes retraining the brain to think out what you say out loud, before it leaves your mouth. I used to "record" all conversations and play it back to them. Many folks don't realize they sound so stupid.
