When games came on disc format, people wanted to protect their games or they would buy it and not open it, hoping it would be of value some day.

Since they own the intellectual property, they felt they could make a copy of it and play that. Legally, they can do that.

However, many people obviously play the back ups and NOT EVER have owned the original game. While this seems harmless it actually hurts all gamers.

When thousands of people have a back up of a game without the game company making any money, they get screwed. They stop making innovative games because now they HAVE to sell a formula that works and that sells.

Eventually, they may have to sell their studio to keep afloat and then make NO games.

It's simple: you like the game..reward the people who did the work by paying them.

I report every post about how to back up games or download them for free. I know it won't stop anyone, but as someone who doesn't want to play GTA or Halo clones for the rest of his natural born days, it is a small step towards a solution.

This has 2 common meanings:
1) The original copy of the game (the CD or DVD or Cartridge) would be copied to a blank media so that if the original gets damaged, you can still reload the game

2) As you play a game, you can often save your current state and status in the game. Before taking an action, you can copy your game (either on the hard drive, or to a new spot on a memory card) so that you can try to play knowing that if you die, you can go back to the copy of your saved game.

Back up, in computer terms, means to make an emergency copy of something.

you take a save from a game and you copy the save data to a device. I know because I have a Action Replay Max where you can back-up game saves.
