I love the original movies are I am interested in watching these. But if it is just 2 minutes of someone riding a horse here and 4 minutes of someone talking about dumb stuff, I don't want to waste 10+ hours of my life watching them.

Ok, judgemental people. I have read the books and really like movies too. My point is, if it is not extra stuff that helps the story, but is just cosmetic fill, I don't want to watch it. Thanks everyone for their answers, and sorry that I can't reward ridicule and stereotyping.

If you're a fan, the extended scenes in LOTR, especially Return of the King are worth watching. Examples from ROTK (no spoilers): Sarumon & Wormtongue scene; Houses of Healing scenes; Frodo & Sam scene with the Orc Army & others.
These are completely new scenes, not extended - although there are some of those as well.

The LOTR extended versions explains the movie better. Of course nothing beats the books but no one would want to watch 2 hours of hobbit's journey from Hobbiton to The Prancing Pony.

The extended version includes additional scenes not just an extended 2 mins of riding, walking or talking. They have that too but not as many as the additional scenes. Once you've seen the extended version, you would never want to watch the theatrical version. Ever. I assure you that you will not be wasting your time.

The ultimate question is: have you read the books? If you have read the books, then much of what is in the extended versions will be a pleasant surprise. It's mainly scenes that did not necessarily contribute to moving the plotline forward, but were in the books. The scenes contribute further character development.

The battle scenes are also slightly extended featuring violent footage that was cut to avoid an R-rating. And aside from one or two scenes in Return of the King, you won't see any major additions of special effects footage.

Based on your phrases "talking about dumb stuff" and "waste 10+ hours of my life watching them," I'd say stick to the theatrical cuts. You are not the intended audience (Tolkien fanboys like me) of the extended editions, and will likely be very bored.

The extended scenes are definitely a plus. They are legitimate parts of the story. Now that I have the extended versions, I gave away the original-release DVD's I had.

I have all the extended versions...I have to say they are better. I've read all the LOTR books and The Hobbit and The extended versions are truer to the whole storyline than the theatrical versions.

I sat through them and thought it was worth it. There is supposedly a more extended version on the way. It wasn't just more Sam and Frodo staring at each other or Liv Tyler in flashbacks speaking Elvish.

personally i like the extended versions, i have read the books and like the extra bits here and there. my favorite part is how they finsih the story with Faramir and Eowyn although it wasn't critical to the storyline.

haha delusionale, the journey from hobbiton is my favorite part. i can't believe they left out the forest and tom bombadil. but still, the extended editions are definitely, far more than worth it. so awesome...
