It is not an absolute given that most people are that negative in their trust. However, I must admit that we are in very trying times with the threat of terrorism looming over our heads and the like of faith in a deceiving government. I do understand your point. I watch many of the court shows on TV and its appalling how many litigants who don't seem to know when they are responsible for their deeds to continue the point. Mainly ones reputation is what precedes him. If one is known for lying in the past then it would be hard to give him credit for telling the truth. If one is known for his honesty and being stand up and forthright, then it would qualify him to be believable.
If you are sincere in your truthfulness, then I would not waste much effort with the people who choose not to believe you. Eventually the truth will prevail.
Here is a quote for you. "When things are not going your way, use it as a chance to show how much class you have".

I have a question for you . Are the people that you are referring to actually saying to your face that you are lying or is this an assumption ? Have you exaggerated in telling any stories and they have found out? Do you believe little white lies don't matter?
This is my own personal belief system . Believe in yourself and the decisions you make.
Self confidence and self esteem sound like some areas that need working on. We are all individuals and the government is made up of people just like you and me . We all have strengths and weaknesses some more so than others.
Scripture states that perfect love casts out all fear. If you love yourself why would anyone fear or be afraid of you and visa versa

I've only met a few people that tell it like it is. It's very rare these days as you said. I don't think 9/11 had anything to do with that. I would rather be with someone who is honest than someone who's fake. I tell little white lies about someones weight or age cause that hits home with everyone even men.

as more and more people live closer and closer the world becomes more competitive and suspicions are raised about your motives. but also with the greater population some individuals will stop at nothing to get a head including lying. but most the time people that think you are lying are liars themselves

Because lying is very, very, common, and a good liar really puts on a truth act. So when you tell the truth people who have been burnt think that you are lying.

Because no one is truthful anymore. It used to be that only a handshake was needed to seal a deal and it sould be counted on, but now even the most binding of contracts can be evaded. No one has integrity anymore.

Most people are doubtful of the truth unless they witnessed the actual incident in a case.
