Do you believe it is possible to use some currently illicit drugs such as marijuana, psychedelic mushrooms, LSD or Ecstasy (MDMA) in a recreational yet respectful, useful, intellectual, therapeutic or even spiritual way?

Wow. Lots of passionate responses. Not, however, the kind of open-minded discussion I was hoping to invite.
To those of you who felt that this was a plea for help, thanks just the same. I'm actually a helping professional who works with drug addicts, and I find that trying to understand the root causes of their drug use, rather than condoning or condemning it, is the best course of action. Many of your responses reflect your own experiences with drugs, and this was not intended to be a forum for intervention. (Coincidentally ... I AM one of those folks who HAS used substances recreationally for over 25 years to no ill effect ... I have a higher education, a professional career, a healthy personal and social life, a home, friends and family who love me, and many blessings that others do not, for which I am grateful.
To those of you who use alcohol, smoke cigarettes, eat sugar, drink coffee, tea, soda, eat fatty foods or take meds, you'd do well to reconsider your own drug use.

It's possible. I'm sure every drug has been tried only once by someone somewhere. So just try each drug once in your own home and you're not going to hurt anyone else. Common sense, weed should be legal. Smoke all you want whenever you want as long as you can afford it.

For some reason it's ok to use drugs with health benefits but not drugs with recreation benefits. Both have negative side effects but only one is legal. Go figure.

I believe, that while a person is using those types of drugs they think they can use them "moderately and responsibly". A few years later some sober up and realize, no they can't be. The rest continue to fight the big fight. Hoping one day drugs will be legalized. And actually most of these drugs were legal and prescribed at one point in history. Most were deemed illegal and unhealthy after doctors started to see the long term damage they were causing. Cocaine used to be prescribed to help depression (and a hundred other things), heroine for stress and anxiety, and so on. If they were not able to control people under a doctors care, how can an individual control himself?

Anyone who answers your question with a "No" and drinks booze or smokes cigs Is a HYPOCRITE!

The Only drug from your list that I would say can be used responsibly is Pot. Why? Because in the Total history of medical science there has NEVER been a single documented case of someone ODing on pot!
LSD and Ecstasy have to be manufactured by Someone and since they are illegal, they have to be manufactured "underground". That is, NO oversight or quality control by the FDA. They cook crap up in their basement and you only have LUCK on your side that they knew what they were doing! Sorry, but NOT This kid!

Pot is grown! It is natural and in MY opinion, is safer then Alcohol or tobacco! Just Don't get caught with it!

Are you kidding me?! Yeah, that's just what America needs. More responsible drug users taking care of their kids, if you can call it that, more like teaching their kids how to be future drug users, and then having more kids being born with brain damage and disfigured bodies because they had sex while responsibly using drugs during conception. Being responsible means getting up and going to work everyday, on time, paying your bills, treating your body right, and teaching your kids and other peoples' kids that drugs are bad. There is no way drug use is responsible. It's totally irresponsible, but you're just to high to realize it and are probably use to kidding yourself. Don't try to pull the wool over your own eyes. You know it's not a good thing and it's not a responsible thing to be high. People die from using them. Is it responsible to die before your time? My kid has to live with a pot head and it sickens me to think this moron is not functioning on 100% brain power while supposedly watching and taking care of my little 2 year old. Yes there was a time when I too thought it was cool to do them, and that's why I can tell you it's stupid and irresponsible to do drugs and alcohol. Think of the little kids who haven't had a chance to live as long as you. Think of what would happen if people took responsibilty to an all time low. Think of all the kids who would die because of this stupidity called responsible drug use. Give an inch, take a yard. Think about it. ;)

Try it once you will like it. Try it twice your hooked! When you get hold of some bad stuff maybe that will wake you up..... if it don't kill you or make a vegetable out of you for the rest of your life. Go ahead eat it, snort it, puff it, shoot it up.
It's your life, your only looking for someone to justify what your doing. Responsible manner, what a joke..... I've seen my son on crank or whatever it's called. I seen my granddaughter fall from 135 lbs to 105. Death warmed over.

The conclusion of most experienced users and researchers after years of investigation is that they are just different kinds of intoxicants...
