people don't care as much today......men and women are both cheating on each other like crazy....people don't trust their spouses as much as they used to, and I always hear older people say it's cause couples don't have the will to work things out these days......but hey.....marriage might be worth a try if you're optimistic

People get married for the wrong reasons. People should date for a while. Take out the the fun, and sex and see if there's enough left to build on for 40 or 50 years.

a very interesting question

i tend to think of embarking on a relationship like this

when you build a home (IE a house) you need foundations before you start building walls - and brick walls before you start buying in the paint and wallpaper

in other words that when you build a home you need to be sure that you have done all the previous work properly

otherwise the house will start to collapse before too long

I think similarly to building a home - marriage-wise

many people who would make careful business decisions usually even don't apply the same kind of methods in finding a suitable partner - many live for the moment and just marry based on a particular mix of hormones that they are suffering from that season - and then later wake up to realize that they had been painting walls when the foundation was woefully inadequate

I would advise that people who are thinking of getting married one day to start drawing up a list of things in their life and their prospective partners lives that will be important (ie worldview, size of family (or if no children wanted), pets, career, ambitions) and then look for a partner that fits fairly closely to these things (and only then the issue of personal attraction to be considered)

before anyone knocks it - it worked for me and i have been happily married for over 14 years now and we love each other more each year that passes

I think it's sad how high the divorce rate is these days. But I think it has a lot to do with idealization and expectations. I think people don't expect marriage to be as hard as it is. They expect the fairy tale and when they find out its anything but some don't want to stick around to try and work it out. Or maybe they don't know how to, don't know where to go for help, don't know even what's wrong, and it just gets out of hand. I think we're just coming to the age where they're putting out there more ways to help couples in trouble.
