I've gotten 'assigned' to live in a basement room. It's terribly basementish. There is mold on the walls, its humid, it is ugly, and there are many more other factors that contribute to the overall 'basement' feeling. Can anybody help?
I'd be especially interested in plants that do well with about 0 light, or maybe an hour or two per day.
But, anything on how to make a basement comfortable would be helpful, thank you!

Ok, It seems people are mostly commenting on the mold, but you see, I really don't have an option unless I want to move into the kitchen. So ways to totally wipe out the mold would be appreciated. None of my stuff is there yet so if I have to take extreme measures, I'll do it. Thanks!
Also, what do you guys think about hepa fans, etc?

Mold on the walls is unhealthy.
Also the humid condition is contributing to the mold, that is unhealthy also.
You need to report it to the managment & make sure it gets cleaned out before you move in.'

Man, that sucks! Mold on the walls is a health hazard, so is it a dorm or a rental? If so the landlord, or resposible person should have to clear up the mold problem! Secondly, are you allowed to paint the walls? If so a nice bright paint color would lighten the room up a bit. If you can't paint, you could staple large peices of fabric to the walls to brighten up the space. Also, some good bright lighting is a definite must. Can you afford a dehumidifier? I'd spring for this if at all possible to deal w/ the humidity. Are you in a climate that is humid all year? If not, maybe pass on that since summer & humid weather will be gone soon. (I live in the Northeast) As for plants, I used to have an office in a basement and had a lot of plants that did well. Pathos are pretty durable and don't need much light. Aso, Jade plants do well in low light. Good luck, I'm sure you'll find a way to spruce the place up, somehow!

You must get a dehumidifyer immediately, and position it to empty into the basement drain. It is for the good of the entire building to dehumidify the basement. Clean the mold with bleach and dump a cup of straight bleach down that basement drain every month to keep it clean.
Once you have cleaned up the toxic problems, get a few long mirrors and hang them horizontally to catch the light and spread it around some more.
I can't advise you on plants but I you will find the things I could tell you useful.

it is likely becuase your close to the coast or some thing like that... i'm no longer particular so do not take that as a guaruntee. i imagine that they might want to commence making them so as that they have basements. Basements are a key to help and structure contained in the residing house. also contained in the summer that is extra effective becuase they are cooler than some thing of the residing house (warmth rises & coolness sinks to the bottom of the residing house). Say you had a complete basement, then it will be extra effective to stay down there in than in warmth. Basements also create like a secure practices zone for those elements that get more than a number of tornadoes. Basements have a tremendous variety of positives. an area to shop extra nutrition, washing gadget machines, motorcycles, different stuff i'm forgetting... =]

If there is mold in the basement you shouldn't even be living there. Breathing in the mold spores can bring about heath problems. I s this basement room even legal, I'm wondering. But if there is simply, no getting away from it, some plants that do okay in little light are those vine like plants, don't know what they're called but mine did okay in the basement.

i wouldn't live in the basement if i could get this chain off my leg.
just kidding!
get a dehumidifier. and lots of lamps. as for plants, the philodendron is about the only thing that will grow with little or no light. other than that try silk plants.

If there is mold on the walls that deems the basement unlivable and you need to be reassigned...
