I think Val Kilmer is one of the best of our generation. He actually transforms himself into a roll...
I still to this day am amazed at his Jim Morrison part.. he was extraordinary.

He's really not my favorite, but i think I'd have to go w/ Robert Duvall. Every time he's on screen he's a different person and just steals the scene weather he's the main character or not. And he's an American institution by now. But your right about Brando. Certainly one of the greats no doubt.

I agree with Marlon Brando. After i saw "A street car named desire" i had to watch all his other movies and he was a brilliant actor. Henry Fonda was another good one.

Well.....even after reading all those answers, I will have to go for "Marlon Brando"....... however in present days dear "Tom Hanks" has proven tremendous ability in acting.

Dustin Hoffman, He had some amazing performances that still hold up today, he's got a great range, and unlike DeNiro and Pacino, he does not play the same character each time.
some of his best films are The graduate, Midnight Cowboy, Kramer Vs Kramer,

Here he is the greatest actor of all time and no one who answered this question seems to be aware of it. The one and only Laurence Olivier. The following is from Wikipedia:
Laurence Kerr Olivier, Baron Olivier, OM (22 May 1907–11 July 1989) was an Academy Award winning English actor, director, and producer. He was regarded by many critics, including Russell Lees as the greatest actor of the 20th century. His career stretched over several decades, prolific both on stage and in film. In both media, he played a wide variety of roles, from Othello to a Nazi dentist, (in Marathon Man) to Sir Toby Belch.
A High Church clergyman's son who found fame on the West End stage, Olivier became determined to master Shakespeare, and in turn he became one of the foremost interpreters of the bard in the 20th century. In later years, Olivier became torn by guilt over having left his second wife Vivien Leigh, and so he immersed himself in his work. Olivier played over 120 stage roles, including: Macbeth, Romeo, Hamlet, Othello, Uncle Vanya, and Archie Rice. He appeared in nearly sixty films, including William Wyler's Wuthering Heights, Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca, and his own Hamlet.

I'd have to go with 2 of my favorites:
Female----Katherine Hepburn{Guess Who's Coming To Dinner with Spencer Tracy & Sidney Potier.}
Male----John Wayne(The Duke){ From his movies begining in 1929----mostly uncredited to his breakout movie Stagecoach(1939) up untill his last movie The Shootist(1976) with Ron Howard, Lauren Bacall & his great friend Jimmy Stewart. We lost the Duke on June/11/1979 from lung & stomach cancer.He was 72 yrs. old.(Born May/26/1907.) He is still missed a lot by his die hard fans like ME.****REBELCAT:>>>>
