Don't suggest medication, it will only cover up the real issue (unless he really does have a problem with his brain and needs it.) Talk with him deeply. Find out the main root cause of his depression. Talking may take some time depending on how well you communicate. You find his life problem and help him solve it, you will cure his depression....(unless there is no life problem and it's really a major chemical imbalance he was born with that he can't control without medication)

show your concern for him. Maybe you should try convincing him to go on anti-depressants,like prozac, even though in rare cases it may make things worse. Evaluate his symptoms, certain symptoms can show the severity of his depression, but none the less google depression find out all you can and see if certain things apply him

Hard to tell from a brief description but there is a high likelihood that he needs professional help. Get him some if you can.

You need to separate "depression" from "sadness". If he is depressed, he should seek medical attention as soon as possible.

make him go to counseling. if he refuses, give him an ultimatum. you have to put your foot down for the sake of your family.
