I have a dwarf hampster, and i would never get anything else. This hampster is relativly small, about 6-8 inches long and along with being cute, can be more sociable than a gerbil or a hampster. The dwarf is a great pet because i have mine set in a 10 gallon tank, and he has enough space for a house, a water dish, a small running wheel, and a food bowl. He has enough area to run around and not get cluttered with any of his objects. Also mine is a pretty sociable hampster, he rarely bites and when he does, its a small nibble to let me know he doesn't want to be bothered. I bearly feel the nibble after i have put him down. He has a small running ball, and ive taken him everywhere, he even walks down the block with me. My sisters regular hampster, is not as apeasing to look at because it mostly sleeps, and it just kinda sits there. Most dwarfs are more energetic, and like to run around alot. When mine isn't relaxing, hes climbing on his house, wedging himself in between things and falling asleep in amusing positions.
He is also cleaner, where he creates less of a mess. With bigger hampsters you have to daily pick up pee spots and big lumpy poop, but i find you can leave cleaning his cage to about once a week. Just check every other day for large pee areas. And about 2 times a week just take all the bedding out and give him new ones. He is a joy to have around and by comparsion better than a gerbil, and a regular hampster.

I have two hamsters. I think you should get a hamster. They are less messier than a gerbil and seem to be a lot more friendlier than gerbils. A Black Bear Hamster is a really good pet. I know that they are one of the easiest to clean up after, they have one spot for their potty and that is the only area you have to clean up for the bodily fluids/poop(but you will still have to clean the cage out, so they have a clean area to roam around in). They are much funner than gerbils, they aslo stink less then gerbils ever will. We also have a dalmation hamster, that is really social with us. I think hamsters are a a little more social than gerbils are, unless they get to know their owners really well.

Pet rats. They are a lot nicer than gerbils or hamsters (gerbils and hamsters will bite you for no apparent reason, a pet rat won't). Pet rats are very social animals and enjoy being held and being around people. And they are bigger, so they are easier to find if they accidentally get out of their house.

I've had both in the past and I prefer Gerbils, they were so much more active and friendly. They prefer to live in pairs or more (of the same sex) so don't just get one. They need interesting cages, though, and need lots of love and attention (like all pets), good food, exercise and cleanliness. I've had friends with great hamsters though, I guess it just depends on the personality of the pet.
