The best way to be sure is to check the transmission dipstick. It will tell you exactly what type of fluid to use. There was a suggestion that all fluids are the same (hydraulic). That is NOT the case. Do NOT use type F fluid. Type F, contains fewer friction modifiers and will cause shift problems. Modern fluids have been designed specifically to work with the friction linings in the transmission, and using the wrong fluid can cause shift concerns............Do yourself a favour and put in the recommended fluid as per your dipstick.........

Mercon V .. it's a synthetic auto tranny fluid.. they have found it causes less problems than the Mercon.
Actually Ford is doing away with Mercon and going straight to Mercon V for everything calling for wither one of those fluids
Type F have friction modifers that can cause harsh shifting among other things in newer transmissions

transmission oil is basically skinny motor oil with a set of additives. it is serious to apply the astonishing variety on your automobile. Take a photo of the fluid pan if no longer some thing else and take it to the elements business enterprise. they'll be in a position to perceive it. also, drain the torque convertor if it has a plug to get the incorrect fluid out of there besides. well I can tell you that it is definitely not type F. It will be either dexron/mercon III or Mercon V. The best way to tell is look at the top of the tranny stick if it is Mercon V then it will say so. If it does not say Mercon V then it is dexron/Mercon III.

In Truth,,,all transmision fluid is the same,,,,its all hydraulic fluid.
The only real differences between the two main types are the "Anti-Foaming agent, addatives",,,,,but its all hydraulic fluid.
Your auto manual will suggest "type F"
