I have a 3.5 external hard drive and would like to be able to use it when there are no power outlets around (no I won't get a 2.5 drive because there isn't enough drive space).

Or better yet, is there a USB cable that can connect directly to the power input on the hard drive?

Don't think you're gonna find such a thing. because of the power drain the drive would use. That['s why you see most USB devices with the "brick" power supplies.
