use copper sulfate you must be very carefull though if you use the incorrect ppm(parts per million) you will kill every thing and the fish will have nothing to eat. Yor first step is to figure out what kind of algea you have there are lots of kinds then get the copper sulfate and find the kind of algea you have on the bag and it will tell you the ppm for that kind then you figure how many gallons of water you have inthe pond . I cant tell you the exact equation it will be onthe bag (6 acres 10 ft deep im thinking close to 50lbs._) You will have to find a farm feed store like co-op-Tractor supply. hope this helps

it sounds like the pond is out of balance. how does it drain? if it has no outlet or drains from a location under the surface youll have algae build up. if it drains from the surface like a spillway on a dam there will be less algae build up. also the animal and plant life may be out of balance. if you plant water lilies they will shade the areas where the algae grows, making it grow slower. also if you plant water plants that live entirely below the surface there will be places for young fish to hide from the larger fish. little fish eat algae. also check around other streams in the area and see if you can find any of those little black water snails. catch a handful or so and put them in the pond. theyll reproduce to fit the pond. anyway, any pond will have a little bit of algae. its a part of the ecosystem. I dont recomend any chemicals at all. youll have to use a lot of them and theyll only end up downstream.

One other thing to reduce the amount of algae in the future, is to use less fertilizer on your lawn, etc.

The higher nitrogen in the pond is feeding the algae.

You may want to call your local office of Department of Natural Resources. That, or county agriculture agent. There may be some chemicals available that you can introduce to the fish population that won't hurt them.
